Recently completing her first children’s book, Katy is an artist who constantly invites us to look up and around in amazement with hope and fearlessness. Katy is married to Sam, the local Vicar, and alongside their two children, they love to explore the beauty of their north-west council estate.

Amongst her pieces for Proximity are themes of prayer, trust, and belonging.

In this piece, Balloon Prayers, Katy shares about praying big dreams for her community.

Sometimes it feels to me, as if praying is throwing pebbles down a bottom-less well. I hope they land somewhere but it is hard to keep big thoughts in my heart when I imagine them clattering down into darkness. Yet we know prayer is important, but how small my faith is, in believing my words, my thoughts are making any difference at all. As ever, my human effort is unimpressive. So quick to slow, and even to cease.

But I wonder how God sees my prayers.

Perhaps through God’s eyes my prayers are less like stones, and more like lights, poured out of rusty buckets and on to our neighbours, our communities…filling up the dark and waking up hearts to whisper how loved they are, how called they are to deeper magic.

Perhaps our prayers are more like that.
